DeQuinzio, Jackson, Mastropietro and Spanglers Take Home Hardware from Garfield Christmas Tournament

This past weekend, the Hasbrouck Heights/Wood-Ridge wrestling team participated in the 35th Annual Garfield Christmas Tournament. Stephen Mastropietro lost a hard fought 125 pound overtime semifinal match to Becton's Emmanuel Villanueva but rebounded with a solid 5-0 performance against Edwin Park, NV/ Demarest, to capture third place.

David Jackson, 103 pounder, upset top seed Joseph Baldicanas of Paramus Catholic to advance to his first high school final. Although he lost to Zach Brugger of Bogota/Weehawkin, David had a breakout debut tournament.

Ryan Spangler placed second at 140 pounds, while Joseph DeQuinzio dominated the 135 pounders and was voted Most Outstanding Wrestler.

In the most exciting match of the final, 130 pounder Michael Spangler stunned everyone in attendance when he used an elevated cement job to pin Enrique Romero of Bogota/ Weehawkin.

William Spindler Joins Hasbrouck Heights/Wood-Ridge Coaching Staff
The Hasbrouck Heights/Wood-Ridge wrestling program is excited to announce the appointment of William Spindler as Volunteer Assistant Coach. Coach Billy is an alumnus of Hasbrouck Heights High School. He became Hasbrouck Heights' first wrestling state champion when he won the heavyweight division at the 1976 New Jersey High School State Championships. He later wrestled for the University of Georgia Bulldogs. He placed third in 1977 and 1980 in the S.E.C. Championships. If you see coach around ask him to tell you the story of when he took down Victor, the 650 pound black wrestling bear. It's a classic among Hasbrouck Heights wrestling folklore!
